A Napkin For Lunch started back in August of 2009 when I scribbled a joke on a napkin and clandestinely put it in my little sister’s lunch. The response not only from her but all of those at her school was so positive that I proceeded to decorate a napkin for every lunch since that time. As it stands, I have created a Napkin Joke for every single day she has been in school this year.
The jokes on these napkins range from pop culture references, to funny comics, to internet fads, and even some personal jokes simply for my sister’s (or her friends’) amusement. You’ll also see a lot of napkins referring to “The Game” (ha, you lose!). If you don’t know what the Game is, I suggest you leave the 90s and look it up, it’s kind of a big deal.
The art is sometimes great, sometimes horrible as they’re being drawn at 3am when my sister has no chance of seeing them beforehand, but is all done with Sharpie markers on napkins. At first it was simple sketches with black marker, then red, and now I have multitudes of rainbow markers crowding up my desk for napkin usage.
What started as an attempt to annoy my sister has become a wonderful pet project, and I’ve had the great honor of collaborating with some amazing minds to create new and hilarious napkins. As I write this, there are dozens of the napkins sitting lonely about the house, their lunchtime passed, and I believe it’s about time that they were shared with the world.
Enjoy.
